34 emulators and counting!

Saturday 6/6/98

This is truly a momentous update for Acorn emulation. For the first time 16 bit games are playable at realistic speeds on your Acorn. I've been expecting this to happen for a long time, and finally in several fields emulation has now overtaken the Acorn games market for both quality as well as range of games, read on...

MAME v0.33 beta 3.1 has been released, it now supports 541 games. MAME v0.33 beta 4 should be out soon.

The premiere of MESS, the multi console and computer emulator has been released! Initially the emulator only supports emulation of ColecoVision, ColorGenie, TRS80, NES and MEGADRIVE!!!!! Pages concerning the individual systems have also been updated.

The very first version of Paul Clifford's ARM coded PC Engine emulator has been released! I seriously recommend the first ROMs you download are Bomberman 94, R-Type, and Afterburner, to truly demonstrate the power of the PC Engine.

Archie v0.2, an Archimedes emulator for the PC under DOS has been released. It now has partial IOC (Input/Output Chip) emulation and can play BIAtetris perfectly! If you have access to a PC (and who doesn't) take a look, it's truly breath taking.

Brief technical specifications have been added for the PC Engine, C64, CPC, Atari ST, Spectrum, BBC and Spectrum 128, to compliment the Sega Master System, NES and Gameboy information that was already done. Thanks to all the emulator authors who supplied me with the information.

I've done a nice little :o) interview with Gareth Long, who is working on MAME, MESS, Retrocade and SNES9x for the Acorn. It makes for a superb read giving a great deal of insight into what goes on behind the scenes. The interview link, as with the previous interview with Paul Clifford will be from the email address book page.

Andreas Stroiczek is working on a new version of his CPC emulator. For the next version he's hoping to get perfect timing and screen emulation, although this version may be a while in being released.

A new version of v2600, the Atari 2600 emulator is in the works, with the porter Ian Molton planning a desktop frontend, multi-tasking mode, possibly joystick support, keypress selection, Binary to C26 file format convertor, and nostaglia ROM cataloging information.

A new version of STem, the Atari ST emulator by Sam Ellis has been released with several bug fixes to the MC68000 core, a faster MFP timer C, joystick control (via keypad) and the ability to boot TOS 2.06.

PC Engine, MESS and the new version of STem have been added to the Acorn Emulation Archive

Boring statistic: with this update, the Acorn Emulation Page now has over 300Kb of HTML, not counting old news pages (that's a lot of writing). BTW, has anyone ever downloaded the old news archive, am I wasting my time keeping it uptodate, or should I decompress them so that the archive news is available online?

I've added a few more ROM links, added a few links to the Emulation programming page.
