Psion Series 3 (via PC Emulator)

Psion3 Title ScreenFirst things first, if you haven't got a PC Emulator then this is no use to you. However, for those of you that have a PC Emulator, this is an emulator of the Psion Series 3 handheld organiser, written to run on the PC. Under my (software) PC emulator, I can run this Psion emulator without even using any hard disc space, at an (almost) usable speed on my ARM 3 A5000!!

Acorn went in with Psion a few years ago, to provide the Acorn Pocketbook, for use in fieldwork in schools, and other places. For this reason, quite a bit of software was developed for use with the Pocketbook on the Acorn side, and much more for the basic Psion organiser. Although the Psion 5 has been released recently, the Psion 3 is still in a lot of general use, and though I'm afraid your sluggish desktop Acorn is not quite so portable, it can still run the software.

Psion3 emulator on the program selection screenThe emulation itself is very good, as it was developed by Psion for testing the early versions of software in development for the Psion3, and as such, should be fairly sturdy and accurate. This is good news, as it seems that the emulator hasn't been developed since 1992.

The emulator comes provided with 'Time' and 'Word', two simple utility programs, but you should be able to get a lot more from other places. It is very important that you follow the instructions in the docs file, provided in the emulator archive to the letter, as otherwise it will mysteriously fail, it is very easy to do, but must be done before you run the emu. There is also a series 3a emulator, available below, but you may have problems running this under the PC Emulator.

The two screen shots above were both done on my A5000, using the emulator in CGA for added speed, though as you can see, this has stretched the display vertically somewhat! For best speed, run the emulator in a poor graphics mode eg. CGA (the graphics on the Psion3 are not up to much anyway), run the emulator in single-tasking mode, disable the magnified display, and run from hard disc. I should think on a RISC PC or A7000, it should be at full speed quite easily with only a software emulator!
