The first place to turn for any information on this programming language is the Perl Page. From there, links point to online manuals, the FAQ, and the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN) - a huge library of extensions for the language. There is a local CPAN mirror at Demon.
If you want to run Perl on a UNIX workstation or a PC, there are also links to pre-compiled binaries. For Acorn Perl, turn to Nicholas Clark and Andrew Black's port of Perl v5.004. Although the current version is officially a beta, it is very stable and is almost ready for full release. Nicholas and Andrew have been working hard to catch up with the main Perl release schedule, and it appears that they are almost there. Acon users will then have each new release of the language at the same time as everyone else!
For discussion of Perl, there are two choices. Andrew Black maintains an Acorn Perl mailing list; contact him for further information. There are also four newsgroups: comp.lang.perl.announce
, .misc
, .modules
and .tk
. Traffic on .misc
tends to be high, and not always on-topic, but there are plenty of Perl Gurus lurking. Just make sure that you have checked the FAQ first!
