Time for a new Pathname Style?

Since Acorn are now upgrading Filecore for RISC OS 4, we can assume that backwards compatibility is going to be limited. Is it not time that we moved away from the present pathname style of
ADFS::$.path.name.file/pseudo_extension
and adopted the UNIX-style
ADFS::/path/name/file.real_extension ?

It seems the right time to do it. So many Unix and DOS freeware applications just won't port easily because of this hangover from the days of DFS. I'm not generally in favour of "me too" solutions but this seems to be one which, like the PCI bus, is a very good idea.
