Acorn World '97
- Digital is producing a new "SuperChip", known as ASIC 3 within Acorn. Is this the SA-1500?
- This device will be central to Acorn's development strategy in '98-'99.
- It is expected to deliver approximately 1500 Mips, at a cost of $50.
- The first customers for products based on ASIC 3 will be announced around the end of the year.
- Acorn are due to start work on their first SA-1100 design in a few weeks.
- The SA-1100 delivers around 200 Mips, at a cost of $29.
- Development with the ARM7500 is still continuing, and the device is getting faster.
- The Digital-Intel Patent Deal: Peter Bondar's view is that the StrongARM is unlikely to suffer from the deal. Intel have bought the technology in order to enter the embedded systems market; in the light of this, they are unlikely to drop the design. Intel would also have difficulty in stopping StrongARM development - the processor has become too well established, and it has too many customers. Latest News.
