Set-Top Boxes and Network Computers
Acorn World '97
- Future development of both the STB and NC will involve integrating Java, MPEG support and the LanTV system.
- A new Set-Top Box, the STB3, will use the ASIC 3 "SuperChip". The predictions are that it will be a half to a third the price of the current model, with ten to twenty times the speed.
- On the NC front, there will be further enhancements to the coNCord StrongARM-powered machine.
- Also mentioned was a "Mini Internet Device". Could this be a development of the earlier Portable machine? A palm-top machine was on display, sending email to a desktop machine. Is this the new design for the US customer?
- Acorn are also working on integrated television NCs - what they consider to be "high end" home internet devices. The corresponding "low end" devices were labelled WebPhones.
