It looks like Stan Boland, Acorn's Chief Executive, has carried out what the Interim Report threatened. In summary...
Effectively, Acorn's Workstations Division has ceased to exist and all its development projects have been cancelled. Between 60 and 75 people have lost their jobs, including many well-known names. It is rumoured that both Chris Cox and Dave Walker have been made redundant.
What makes this decision all the more surprising is that Phoebe was almost ready for production. The day before the cancellation was announced, Developers were told that the first production-specified Phoebe had successfully started up. This machine was running with one of the first production IOMD2s, the initial cause of the delayed launch.
Newsgroup rumours suggest that the decision to cancel was made when the Phoebe team sought approval to start production. Stan Boland refused to approve the necessary funds, sealing the fate of the project.
Keith Hall posted a statement from Stan Boland, which sets out his reasons for this decision.
