Phoebe 2100: Aleph One
Wakefield '98
- Aleph One have an important role to play in Phoebe's development, as they are providing the PC card.
- The intention is to use a PCI-based PC card, of which there are many available.
- Prices for these cards vary between $200 and $2,000, depending on the level of features supplied on the card.
- The most basic devices consist of a Processor, memory sockets and the PCI interface. Others add sound and graphics support.
- Aleph One are looking at a minimum specification of a 166MHz Pentium, although the cards to be used have not yet been chosen.
- The company's existing applications and software drivers will be modified to use the new cards.
- Some of the features of the present PC-card system may not be possible, however. As the PC-card is less tightly coupled to the Acorn system, it may not be possible to run the PC display in a window. Particularly with cards that implement their own graphics hardware, a switch may be required to take the video output either from Phoebe or the card.
- Aleph One hope that this situation may be avoided with a modified version of their existing display drivers.
- It is hoped that the launch date will coincide with that of Phoebe itself.
