Maths Teacher required with RISC OS knowledge (16th September 2006)

Knightsfield School is recruiting for a Maths teacher. Given the strong foundation the school has in RISC OS, they're quite keen to locate somebody who is both a RISC OS enthusiast and a qualified maths teacher! If you're already teaching but are after something as a new challenge, take a look. [link] [flame us]

Richard Hallas departs Foundation RISC User (4th September 2006)

Richard Hallas, editor of Foundation RISC User (and previously RISC User) magazine, is to depart at the end of this volume. Returning to university, he's to complete a post-graduate degree on the history of Acorn; hopefully concluding with the publication of a book. We wish Richard well in his studies. [link] [flame us]

Nvidia FX52 series plus RISC OS 5.12 (4th September 2006)

Given the age of the GeForce MX2 cards that were installed in the Iyonix PC, it was only a matter of time before they were replaced with newer technology. John Ballance recently announced on the Iyonix mailing list that recent Iyonix PCs have been shipping with FX52 series cards instead; as well as RISC OS 5.12. The upgrade will also be available to existing Iyonix users, albeit for a fee. [link] [flame us]

CinoDVD hits the pause button... (4th September 2006)

The team behind CinoDVD, the software-based DVD player for the Iyonix PC, have suspended the project as they believe that continued development is no longer financially viable. "Given the price of standalone DVD players", Neil Spellings commented, "I'd be surprised if people would actually pay the huge premium that a commercial DVD player for RISC OS would require to cover development costs". Quantum Software (3rd August 2006)

Stuart Halliday has decided to call it a day with Quantum Software. As a result, both Keystroke and Blinds have been made available along with their source. With sixteen years development, and Keystroke receiving somewhat strong acclaim from the likes of Paul Beverley (I wonder if he still uses it?) it's a shame to see somebody who has been in the market for so long depart. We wish Stuart well.. particularly as he was one of the originators of The Cybervillage. [link] [flame us]

Small is the new big (3rd August 2006)

With Advantage 6 having released the A9home to the public, it was only a matter of time before other RISC OS-aware manufacturers jumped on the mini computer bandwagon. R-Comp Interactive have announced today the RISCube MINI. With an impressive specification, this computer is only the size of a hardback book. Depending upon specification, priced around the £999 mark are expected. More details shortly... [link] [flame us]

Duplex printing available from RISC OS (3rd August 2006)

Having followed a thread on csa.misc regarding the issues of duplex printing on RISC OS, Paul Vigay promptly put together a Printer Definition File for the Xerox Phaser colour laser printer. Available in either 300 or 600dpi supporting variations, it integrates with the standard !Printers application allowing you to produce either single-sided or full duplex documents. It works with any Postscript laser printer, and is freeware. Support Paul by downloading it! [link] [flame us]

RISC OS Now! (3rd August 2006)

Louie Smith, having made an appearance alongside Paul Vigay at a recent RISC OS event, has announced her plan to launch a new magazine for RISC OS users. With the ambitious aim of attracting both new and existing users, the magazine is going to be printed and will feature regular competitions; especially for cover art. While we have our doubts as to the viability, we do wish Louie well. [link] [flame us]

USB Ethernet driver (25th June 2006)

Thanks to the work of James Peacock it'll soon be possible to use an Ethernet network over USB through RISC OS. What the driver does is to turn the USB port into a network socket. James, who owns an Iyonix, has written for the Castle USB stack but we're hopeful that one for the Simtec stack will also appear. [link] [flame us]

The Hopeful Honeymooners (25th June 2006)

Not directly RISC OS related, but certainly interesting. A couple struggling to deal with the financial burden of a dream wedding are selling links from their website. The site, www.sendusonhoneymoon.com, allows donation to be made directly and explains some of the background. [link] [flame us]

Wanted: RISC OS books (12th June 2006)

Alligata Media is on the hunt. If you've written enough material for a RISC OS-friendly book but have never had the time to finish it off; we'd like to help. We'll put your creation into finished book form; make it available online and provide a complete breakdown of sales. [mail us]

Alligata Media bundle (12th June 2006)

I've taken the opportunity to update the link at the top of the homepage to eBay Advisor - our current newsstand magazine. As a reader of The Cybervillage, if you state 'Cybervillage' as a note when paying through PayPal we'll put into the envelope a collection of other Alligata Media products - many RISC OS related. It's £4.99 in the UK, post free. [link] [flame us]

Knightsfield School requires a Yr 7 teacher (11th June 2006)

Things were so much simpler when there was an Acorn computer in every classroom. Well we like to think so, at least. Sharon Pointeer of The Knightsfield school in Hertfordshire, has pointed us towards a new vacancy for a part time Yr 7 teacher. Certainly seems a good opportunity for one. [link] [flame us]

RISCDomain goes digital (28th May 2006)

It's scheduled at the moment for the start of August, but RISCDomain presents... Graphic Design will appear shortly. It's a complete magazine-style exploration of RISC OS graphic design, including interviews with designers who have used RISC OS in their work; practical tutorials and much more. If you'd like to be involved, do please let us know - we need examples of graphic design and a whole lot more! [flame us]

Ovation Pro goes dutch (28th May 2006)

Dutch RISC OS user Frank Vandekerkhove found himself working his way through an entirely English language program when using Ovation Pro. (To my own recollection there was a German language translation available, but I am unsure as to current availability). He therefore worked his way through the program and translated it into Dutch. He's making the result available for 15 euro, at the RISC OS Road Show 2006. [link] [flame us]

More from MoreDesk (28th May 2006)

Version 1.08 of MoreDesk has just been released by 7th Software. With a cool new feature similar to the alt-tab in Windows, you can switch between the different active desktops using the Alt and Tab keys together. Further details are given on the website, and the program is available for £14.99. [link] [flame us]

eBay Advisor (28th May 2006)

It's something I edited, so please forgive the self publicity. eBay Advisor, a comprehensive guide to life with eBay, has now been published. In a hundred page title there are perhaps ten pages of relevance solely to PC users; making the rest suitable for Mac and Acorn users alike. It's £4.99 inc UK carriage; and if you state you're a RISC OS user you'll get some extras thrown in. [link] [flame us]

RISC World hits seven! (18th May 2006)

RISC World, the alternative RISC OS magazine, hits seven with the next issue. When The Cybervillage asked Aaron Timbrell, editor, for a comment he replied 'it's two in the morning. F*ck off...'. With features including an explanation of how to put your Risc PC in a somewhat more stylish case, and a report on the Wakefield Show, you can secure your copy - along with a CD of the words from the last six years - through the RISC World website. A subscription costs £21.90 (UK) or £24.50 (Overseas). [link] [flame us]

SuperDoku 1.05 released (18th May 2006)

The announcement for SuperDoku made me chuckle suitably. 'If you have any money left after the Wakefield Show, why not spend it on the latest version of SuperDoku?'. Brazen it may be, but SuperDoku is one of the best implementations of SuDoku for the RISC OS platform. With a registration fee of £5 you could do worse than do just that. Go on. Do it now. Wakefield 2006 (18th May 2006)

If you're reading this and haven't yet realised, you've missed the biggest RISC OS event of the year. Wakefield 2006 occured last weekend, with the A9home finally on retail sale, ArtWorks 2.6 released, a PDF-friendly version of EasiWriter, the launch of UniScan from RComp and the Excel converters for Schema. Both The IconBar and Drobe have show reports - so we're gonna point you in their direction! [link - iconbar] [link - drobe] [flame us]

Fancy a job in education? (25th April 2006)

Sharon Pointeer, Deputy Head of Knightsfield School, has recently posted a vacancy to comp.sys.acorn.announce. The school is looking for a part time ICT technician to support the works of teachers using ICT equipment. The school has a network of over 40 computers running RISC OS Adjust. Click the 'Link' option for further details about the post. [link] [flame us]

Castle leaves Cambridge (25th April 2006)

Castle Technology have recently confirmed a return closer to their original Framlingham offices. While the former Castle site has now been levelled to the ground, Castle's new address at 8 Britannia House, Bentwaters Business Park, Rendlesham IP12 2TW is probably less of a commute for Jack Lillingston and co. House warming gifts should be sent directly. [flame us]

Dutch RISC OS Roadshow gets go ahead (20th April 2006)

RISCOS Limited today confirmed that enough exhibitors had confirmed attendance to make the Dutch roadshow happen. Set for Saturday 17th June, many of the usual exhibitors for the Dutch exhibition are making the trip across from the UK and elsewhere. Icon Technology, Archive and others - we salute you! Further details on the event will appear shortly. [flame us]

The Cybervillage: update (20th April 2006)

Given our recent problem with spam on the Noticeboard, we had two options. We would either have had to remove it, or to look for a way of making it a little more secure; either through registration or verification of each post made. The end result, thanks to Rich @ The Icon Bar, is a somewhat more secure noticeboard. Do let us know what you think. [flame us]

The Fourth Dimension games releases (6th April 2006)

APDL are compiling CD-ROMs of the best Fourth Dimension games, ensuring that they'll all work on StrongARM RISC OS 4 computers and charging £14.90 for them. While on the one hand this does away with the packaging, what it does do is make available some titles that have otherwise not been available in any form for some years. It's hoped that some titles that didn't quite make it the first time will become available. [link] [flame us]

CJE Micros turns 25 (6th April 2006)

Is CJE Micros the longest-running company still actively supporting what was the Acorn market? This year the company turns 25. Launched in 1981, CJE Micros ran advertising in the Acorn press pretty much from that point forward. Having taken over Norwich Computer Services and various other product lines from Eclipse, Gamesware and Circle Software, they're still one of the largest players. [link] [flame us]

Xara Xtreme source released (6th April 2006)

Xara Limited (once known as Computer Concepts) have, as promised, released the source code to Xara Xtreme. Once known as Xara Studio, this is an evolution of the original PC version of ArtWorks and Xara hope that it will lead to the production of Linux and Macintosh-ready versions of the program. The implications for RISC OS are probably somewhat limited, but we remain happy to be corrected on that. [link] [flame us]

The Cybervillage (6th April 2006)

Hmm.. has been a while. The Cybervillage is back, hopefully for updating on a somewhat more regular basis. We're going through the site as a whole to see what material hosted on this server is out of date, or mirrored elsewhere, to try and speed up the server in general. If you'd like to contribute to the site, please do so - your comments and suggestions make putting the site together worthwhile. [flame us]

Qercus 277

Having resisted the temptation to comment on this for a long time, we can resist no more. Put simply, Finnybank, where is it? It's been six months. [link]
